FHSAA Field Clinic - The board discussed a proposal
from Jeff Amper to bid on the 2003 state field clinic as a combined effort
between the two associations. The discussion was voted unanimously against as
the Lake Region officials are bidding for the clinic, as they hosted it three
years ago, and the WCOA has excellent rapport with Lake Region, which should not
be compromised. The WCOA will be in line for the 2004 clinic on the three year
rotation.
Discussed the 2003 WCOA camp at USF
3-crew camp scheduled for father's day weekend: clinicians mostly confirmed, 41 current campers registered, members
identified to
contact about attending camp, classroom topics to be fleshed out at next
meeting, filming and review of films to be arranged. Court schedules will be
review over the next four weeks, the groups must ensure that all funds received are used for basketball
activities, the classification of campers will occur next meeting, and a schedule of games for Sunday
will be finalized. The guest speaker still needs to be determined. Jim
Eckler will contact the WCOA member clinicians who have not committed. Mike
Crosslin will review Lake Region's availability with Alan Reed.
Camp evaluation techniques : The board will
review the method of preferred for provided timely and receptive feedback to
campers, so as to be able to present information that will allow the campers to
improve or recognize areas which need to be addressed. The camp will make use of
training films, classroom sessions and evaluator-camper film feedback to bolster
critiques and receptiveness.
Officials evaluation during the season: We will
have a better defined group of evaluators who will provide accurate and timely
feedback. Suggestions to critiques are during the half time of the varsity game,
through as phone call initiated by the person being evaluated. or via online
forms, preferably through a one on one feedback. The evaluations committee
will review a demo of All Sports Officiating to determine if their online
evaluation will suffice. Danny Vasquez will present a proposal at one of the
next summer meetings. The visibility of some officials is a problem and the
board will investigate the purchase of a camcorder as well as obtaining game
tapes from selected coaches.
Student Officials - The board discussed a
proposal from randy Sterns to have some of his teenage basketball players
participate in the summer camps. Jon Decker has contacted the FHSAA about
liabilities and insurance; waiting on a response. These players may be
candidates for the FHSAA mentoring program. Another avenue for them could be the
rec leagues and the University of Tampa summer camp.
Summer Leagues - The board voted to provide $500
from WCOA Basketball funds to pay for a qualified summer assigner in order to
provide the high schools with give back during the off season, yet maintaining a
high visibility, while ensuring that the officials assigned to games are held
accountable as they are during the regular season. Jon Decker will work with
Jerry Lambert to discuss this proposal.
Summer Social - As the end of season banquet did
not materialize, the board voted tto hold a social with food provided at Jon
Decker's home, tentatively scheduled for 05:00 PM on Saturday, 08/02/2003.
Members could participate in a golf outing during the day and convene at Jon's
home for the social. Spouses or significant others will be invited.
